It made a difference to that one...

I mentioned in the last post that there was a huge storm last night. We got over 4 inches of rain in a few hours. As we were out for our morning walk, we noticed that the little river (previously green in an earlier post) that runs by our place had overflown it's banks during the night. There were dead fish, rocks, logs, sand, and other debris all over the place. There were also a lot of crayfish that were still alive and wandering helplessly. Brian heroically used some tissue he had brought for a runny nose to pick a few of them up and throw them back into the river.

You've all heard the story of the man throwing starfish back into the ocean after a receding tide had left them stranded and dying on the beach. When told that there were far to many to save and that he might as well give up, the man threw another starfish back into the surf and replied "it made a difference to that one". We quite enjoyed our Wisconsin version of this tale.

It was only after I got to work and was looking for a picture of a crayfish to include with this post that I found an article in our local paper talking about how the crayfish are an aggressive invasive species in Wisconsin, and that the Department of Wildlife encourages people to kill as many as they can. Perhaps we didn't make such a difference after all... :)

This totally made me laugh. Jeff is always using the "It made a difference to that one" line on me. :)

Sweet Irony! I'm different than you, I can't stand the cold and would choose humidity over it any day!

Ha ha. I loved the story. I always took issue with the starfish saying because it seemed likely that within a short time, the same starfish would be back on the shore and would probably die. It's like, wow, you wasted all this time throwing back starfish just so they could a few days later.

Brian,

We use to play with crayfish as well. Instead of putting them back into the water, we would get them to help us hold fire crackers, and then we would light them. Not so nice!
